Learning new things

I've been thinking a lot about the things I've learned since Nate arrived almost 1 year ago. Here are some highlights (in no particular order):

-Cottage cheese is a finger food - who knew?
-How bad a diaper pail can smell
-What it feels like to have poop under my fingernails
-What a formula burp smells like
-How antibiotic-induced farts can make me retch especially when it's all day every day for 10-12 days
-What being tired really means
-What a witching hour is and how happy I am when it stops
-How being slapped open-palmed against my eye feels
-How long 5 minutes can be: 5 minutes away from home and the baby's hungry; 5 minutes until I'm home to see him; 5 minutes of him screaming bloody murder. On all accounts, 5 minutes feels like F.O.R.E.V.E.R.
-How yummy babies smell
-What a mother's love is
-I really can't imagine what life was like before
-How a smile or a giggle makes everything okay
-How proud I am to call myself "Mama"
-How proud I am when Nate calls me Mama
-How I can be extremely excited or sad when Nate cries, holds his bottle, rolls over, babbles, laughs, pees, poops, walks, eats. I once bawled when Nate held his bottle because that meant he no longer needed me to do it for him. 3 months later and I'm still holding his bottle.
-How it feels to sleep with a toe in my ribs at all times
-How exciting it is to have an excuse to nap twice a day
-The beauty of the drive-thru, whether it be for food, banking, or Rx refills
-Sneezing is funny and is always followed by a smile
-The joys of getting lots of stuff out of his nose with the booger-sucker. It's like the satisfaction of vacuuming up something crunchy.

Have anything to add? I'd love to hear it!

Vacation weekend

So Friday we went out shopping and we decided to stop by to see my friend Robbie at work (I've known Robbie since 2nd grade!). We had a good visit and I was happy that Robbie finally got to meet "Virginia Baby".
*Note: We wanted to get together with Robbie, Courtney, and Jack but Jack had croup. Robbie told me that "Virginia Baby" probably didn't want to be around that. Molly then referred to Nate as "Virginia Baby" many times for the next few days!

One of our much anticipated outings of the week was pottery painting, which we did on Friday night. The paint "rules" at this place were not up to what Michelle and I expected, but we tried to let go of our annoyance and focus on the fun. We did have a good time but you wouldn't know it because with two cameras at our disposal, we forgot to take pictures. Doh! Jill made the cutest ice cream cone, Molly made a small plate and a snowman, Michelle made a plate for her plate rack in the kitchen, and Nathan and I made a plate with his name on it along with his footprints. The upside of the pottery was Michelle called on Sunday to see if it was possible that my piece was ready so I could take it home instead of her having to send it. The (same weird) girl said it had just come out of the kiln and she'd get it ready for her. Girl called back a few minutes later and our entire order was ready for pick-up. Yea!

On Saturday, we went up to Stillwater home of Oklahoma State University. I got Nate dressed in his OSU garb and we headed out for a fun day.

One of the best things to do in Stillwater (besides walking on campus) is to eat the world famous cheese fries at Eskimo Joes. Nate ate his first french fry (GASP!) and I think he liked it!

The rest of my trip

Nate and I hung out on Sunday while Michelle was at work. Thankfully we stopped by Target for more wipes and a few groceries because come mid-day Monday we were pretty much iced in for the next few days. Before Michelle left to pick Jill up from school, she stepped onto the seemingly dry driveway to find out the hard way that it was icy. She says she spun like a turtle on her back (she's okay - but man that would've been fun to see). The school's only a mile away but it took quite some time to get there and back. When they got home, the van wouldn't make it up the drive so they parked on the street and put cleats on their shoes to make it up to the door.
*Typical/frustrating 8 y/o kid-isms: Jill asked Michelle why she was late picking her up from school. ALL the other parents came early. And then when Michelle tossed her the cleats to put on to get up the driveway..."but Moooooommmmm, I don't like how they look". Sheesh!

On Tuesday, Jill's friend came over with her mom Lisa and the girls went excited to go outside to sled (or to "go sleighing" as Molly says). Molly wanted to go out but didn't want to dress appropriately. She had the choice of getting dressed or taking a nap. She pouted but went outside!

Nate stayed inside with us and was happy as a clam. We didn't even get out of our jammies that day! Now THAT'S what vacation is about.

Nate took a cozy nap sprawled out on Aunt Shel.

Over the next few days we got in lots of singing performances from Molly, lots of playing My Little Ponies with Molly, and Nate got lots of floor time. He was happy with the trucks, the ride-on car, the Little People, reading all his books, and especially all the attention he got from Jill and Molly.

Jill's school was 1 of 2 districts in the entire state of Oklahoma open on Thursday. Michelle and I (along with all the other Yukon parents) literally did a happy dance/jig when we got the call on Wednesday evening. :) We had lunch with friends then hit the mall. I got Nate some new brown shoes since apparently I dress the kid in brown pants about 4 or 5 times a week (not the same pair).

We picked Jill up from school and headed home to take Molly's car out for a spin. Nate had a ball! Nate also took his first and second sled rides that day. He loved that too! We took some video somewhere...

We celebrated Molly's 4th birthday by having friends over that same night. She is into Kung-Fu Panda - she likes to be Mistress Tiger (do I have that right??).

to be continued...

Vacation - part one

Before we left for the airport, we took some family pictures so Nate could see Daddy and Bosco on the camera while we were away. Note - the kid said "Dada" about one million times in the eight days we were gone. "Mama" came in last at ZERO TIMES said. Michelle - I swear he can say it!

Nate chilling out in his seat before take-off. The flight attendant enticed him with a shiny flashlight that he promptly put in his mouth and gnawed on for the next 30 minutes.

We were lucky on all the planes, we got our own row and everyone around us was really friendly. That was a nice surprise especially after I was a bit miffed that the gate agent in Dulles did NOT tell me that at the end of the jet bridge, there were stairs and only stairs to get to the tarmac and board the plane. And no one to help me, my 2 carry-ons, a stroller, and a 21 lb baby. Thanks to the kindness of strangers who helped me with my bags and stroller!

Also a note about Dulles: no changing stations in any of the bathrooms I visited. WTF? I had to change Nate and his nasty antibiotic-induced diarrhea diaper on the nasty airport bathroom stall floor. Eewwww. I'm sure they spared no expense on the mesmerizing color-y wall though.

Nate was pretty good for the most part and did manage to get some sleep on the plane. He was not happy by the time we got to OKC though. The aforementioned antibiotic-induced diarrhea did quite a number on his tush. That was the beginning of a 3 day intense quest to rid the diaper rash. He was not a happy camper any time he peed, pooped, or had his diaper changed. Poor little guy. Good thing Aunt Shel had about 5 tubes of assorted ointments to soothe the burn. Anyhoo...

We were SO excited to see Michelle at the airport. She got some lovin' in on the boy before we got in the car. He took a nap on the way home (around 9 p.m./10 EST) so it made for a late night. I did get my first Braums trip in on the way home from the airport. Mmmm...hot fudge sundae! Braums has THE best hot fudge on the planet.

Michelle had all sorts of goodies for Nate when we got home. He had lots of toys to play with and look how adorable this coat is! I especially love the look on his face and the fact that he's missing a sock.

Outtakes

I know I have a lot to blog about, what with an 8 day trip to Oklahoma City and a trip to the CHKD ER today, but I'm so worn out I can't focus yet. I am prepping for Nate's 1st birthday party so I had a photo shoot for his birthday invitations yesterday. Here are a few pictures that didn't make the cut. :)
